I'm sitting at a round table with some of my cousins and my brother. My brother is a little boy. My cousin is whispering into my brother's ear. I feel left out.

I look out a window and H---- is playing the accordion in front of some Mummers. She is also singing. The Mummers are looking at her condescendingly. They are also carrying accordions.

I'm swimming at a public pool at a carnival that has underwater horses. I don't have to surface to breathe; I can just swim around underwater. The horses are gigantic and beautiful. I swim close to them -- under their bodies and through their legs. They let me stroke their heads and necks. One just had a foal and she's pushing it along. Sometimes the horses go out of control and then their trainer, who's dressed as a cowboy, jumps on their back and gallops around underwater until they're calm. One horse flips out and the trainer rides her out of the pool and into the crowded carnival. I'm wondering how they keep the horses underwater. I think their hooves must be weighted down.

I'm going to be on trial. I'm either the lawyer or the defendant. There's a woman lawyer and a man. The three of us have to look for the room. It's in a college. It's very crowded. The trial is at 11:00. We're looking and looking. It's getting late. I ask the woman where it is. She says "yes, you're on the right floor," but she doesn't know the room. At one part there's a bunch of older black women and racks of clothes, which they're trying on. I look at my watch and it's 11:30. I'm starting to panic. I don't want to leave the floor, but I look down a stairway.

I'm talking to D----. It's night. We see a man, running down the street, yelling for his baby daughter. Then we hear machine gunfire. He goes to investigate. The police are on the way. We see a group of little kids from the neighborhood. The police come and a drunk man comes up and tells them what happened, while taking a gun away from one of the little boys. I go home and tell G--- and then D---- calls me to tell me what he found out. He's saying so and so was killed -- F----- did it. I can't follow what he's saying and he gets angry with me.

G---'s eating cherry water ice. I'm really thirsty and he won't give me any.

I'm doing an act on a theater stage. Here's my act: I'm walking around on the stage saying sarcastic things about people. I'm wearing an antique bathing suit. I look down at my legs and I'm wearing black wool stockings and black ballet slippers. The audience is enjoying it. I look down again and I'm dangerously close to the edge of the high stage. I'm so relieved that I didn't fall off that I lie down. This is the end of my act. It takes a second for the audience to realize that this is the end, and then there's thin applause. I go backstage to change and there are Big Mess people milling around. I don't want to change in front of them, so I bring my bag into the bathroom. I try everything in my bag on and nothing is right. I can't understand why I didn't bring the right clothes. W---- comes in and I ask her to go get my other bag. We chat for a while. She's smoking a cigarette. Other people start to come into the bathroom, including a strange man who has to pee. I put a towel around me. He pees in the toilet and then begins to fix a large computer, which he placed directly on top of my bag. I'm too embarrassed to ask him to move it. I don't want to go out with just a towel on, but W---- hasn't come back with my other bag.

G--- and I are living in a bad part of Kensington. We have a rusty light blue van, which doesn't lock. We park it in a big parking lot behind our apartment. One day someone in our building tells us that someone doused our van with lighter fluid and tried to set it on fire last night. So the next night we decide to sleep in the van. While we are in the van, a guy starts sanding the rust spots and putting a white powder on them. He's working on the body of the van. G--- and I are confused but then he remembers that he told someone that he wished it was green with a yellow stripe so that's what the guy was getting ready to do. He's worried that he won't do a good job of it and regrets having mentioned it.

I'm performing at a gala event for McDonald's. I'm wearing a gown. It's a simple, straight shape, sleeveless, tangerine colored linen and has a wide yellow band around the bodice. The song I'm singing is an orchestrated version of the "You Deserve a Break Today" jingle.

I'm in a warehouse talking to some people. This guy starts talking to me and I realize that it's Kurt Cobain. He looks pale and tired and I ask him if he wants to go out and get some air. We go out and when we get outside, there are police. They ask for our IDs, and Kurt has none so they have to take him in. Courtney Love is there and she suggests we go back in the warehouse with a cop to look for Kurt's I.D. The four of us (Kurt, Courtney, the cop and me) go back in. We split into two groups -- me and Kurt, and Courtney and the cop. No one else is in the warehouse. We hear a commotion from Courtney and the cop -- banging noises and then Courtney wailing "Oh No!! Oh my God!!" Kurt and I realize that Courtney killed the cop. We go out. There is another cop outside. We are in big trouble. Courtney comes out with the cop -- we see that she didn't kill him, but she beat him up badly. He's holding a handkerchief up to his bloody nose. I apologize to him, but he waves me off like it's no big deal. Everyone realizes that Courtney is the crazy one. We're not in any trouble.

I'm at Head Start Shoes. I have to pick out shoes for E----. All of the shoes are too trendy. I ask the saleswaman if they have shoes for older women and she points me to a rack. I ask if they have extra narrow. Then I realize it's a bad idea to buy her shoes at this point.

I'm in G---'s family's backyard. His sisters are telling me that I have to dive to the bottom to see what it's like. I imagine diving down, down, down until I'm in red water. I don't want to do it, but they try to convince me. They are trying to convey to me the meaning and horror of what's happening.

R-- drives an old car over. It's in a driveway. In order to back it out of the driveway, you have to push it backwards out into the street. He demonstrates. We're nervous because we didn't see if any cars were coming and no one is driving it. It goes across the street and turns and starts going down the road. R-- jumps in and drives it back up the driveway. He gets out and throws a cigarette into the bushes. They catch fire. He tries to put it out with his shirt. I have a plastic bag in my hand so I join in and we put the fire out.

G--- and I are in a big, brightly lit beer hall. We make our way to a table with wooden benches. We sit down. G--- is drunk. He looks nauseous and then he vomits all over me. There is nothing to clean it up with. He passes out and I need to get someone to help me bring him home. I am covered with vomit.

The Rolling Stones are appearing at a J.C. Penney store. I go there with Keith Richards. I'm really thrilled to be hanging out with him. Keith is asking me to explain what a J.C. Penney's is. I explain that it's a discount clothing store. He wants to know why bands are appearing there. I don't know. Patti Smith has just come off stage. I ask Keith if he wants to go say hi, but she's talking to fans so we just wave. She looks young and beautiful. Keith and I discuss how beautiful she looks. We then go to another department in J.C. Penney to meet up with Paul and Linda McCartney. They are lying on the floor among racks of cheap clothing. Keith introduces me as his friend and mentions that I designed some record sleeves. Paul asks me which ones and I can't think of any. I'm embarrassed. Linda doesn't like me. Keith and I have to leave. We go out to the parking lot and it's raining. I go to sit in the car, but when I close the door, it fills with exhaust, so I have to let the rain in.
